Surface Characteristics

The topography of tooling and workpiece surfaces influences the amount of friction and lubrication requirements during the forming process. When highly magnified, the surface resembles a mountain range. Surface peaks and valleys affect the pooling and flow of lubricant over the surface and how how the sheet metal flows over the tooling. Even if the tensile properties look to be similar between two batches, if they have different surface characteristics, they can have different stamping performance.
