Sheet metal stamping is a complex repeatable activity. Forming parts involves nonlinear stresses, tooling/material interaction, friction, binder forces, material flow, material elasticity, and environmental influences. When splitting and wrinkling occur, the root causes of the failures are not always evident. Failure Analysis is disciplined forensic analysis of failures, their history, mechanical measurements, and environmental variables to identify the root causes of manufacturing failures. When we understand how the part failed, it is then important to take the necessary steps to ensure that this cannot re-occur in the future.
