Coefficient of Friction

Stamping and drawing operations frequently involve the interaction between tooling and a workpiece. This interface creates friction between the tooling and the workpiece at a tangent along the workpiece surface. This tangential force can cause the workpiece to fail before the material's tested yield limits. Lubrication can effectively reduce the amount of friction and the forces required to complete the forming operation. Factors that influence friction include:

  • Workpiece and tooling materials
  • Surface roughness
  • Surface condition (oxidized, lubrication material)
  • Forming parameters (temperature, speed, geometry, pressure)
